Nassau, The Bahamas –January 18th, 2021 – The National Health Insurance Authority is pleased to announce and welcome Dr. Eugene Marcus Cooper as the Authority’s Medical Director. As Medical Director, Dr Cooper will be responsible for providing clinical oversight and act as an advisor to the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) Board of Directors, CEO, and Executive Leadership. The onboarding of the Medical Director is another step in the Authority’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage by ensuring relevant clinical advice and support are represented in the program’s various initiatives.

Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr Robin Roberts expressed his pleasure at the milestone that NHIA has achieved in onboarding the Medical Director. “I am confident that the role of Medical Director will bring added value and credibility to the Authority and that Dr. Cooper will bring his passion for quality healthcare, wealth of experience and sound clinical expertise to the program”. Excited to join NHIA Dr. Cooper expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm at the new opportunity. “I’m very happy to be joining the NHIA team in the capacity of Medical Director and I am grateful for the opportunity to help progress and transform Bahamian Healthcare to meet the needs of our patients.”

Dr. Eugene Marcus Cooper joins NHI Bahamas with over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He is the CEO/Medical Director of GastroCare Bahamas and the Outpatient Endoscopy Center and is currently a Consultant in the Department of Medicine at Princess Margaret Hospital and Doctors Hospital. Dr. Cooper received his tertiary education at The University at Albany, with a BSc in Biology; an MBBS from the University of The West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago and subsequently a master’s in health administration (MHA) from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Cooper completed his medical training in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

 

As the NHIA Medical Director Dr. Cooper will support the implementation of NHI’s Strategic Plans as well as provide clinical advice to enhance the delivery of Primary Care benefits and services. He will develop and maintain relationships throughout the health sector for the advancement of access to quality, affordable primary care services. Established in April 2017, The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) aim is to achieve a shared goal of Universal Health Care. There are currently over 90,000 beneficiaries enrolled in the National Health Insurance program, accessing services through over 100 physicians across Abaco, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Exuma and New Providence.
