The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is an agency of the government of the Bahamas, established under the National Health Insurance Act.

In 2017, we started on a journey to deliver accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for the benefit of all Bahamians. To date, we have enrolled over 100,000 persons into the program and this number continues to grow while maintaining patient satisfaction rates over 90% by offering a suite of Primary Care benefits, leveraging an expansive provider network, and implementing a modern electronic health record (EHR) with telehealth capabilities.

Bahamian citizens and residents can enroll online, over the phone, or in-person and must have a valid NIB Smart Card. Enrolled individuals become NHI Beneficiaries by selecting their preferred Primary Care Provider, and receive services at no cost at the point-of-care.

The next step in our journey towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is the Primary Care Transformation Initiative (PCTI). This initiative will integrate the public primary healthcare system, implement pragmatic reforms to private insurance, and provide every eligible person with a single Electronic Health Record. Our goal is to standardize, modernize, and optimize primary care in The Bahamas and establish a strong foundation on which we can sustainably expand what is covered under the program.

We will remain steadfast in our commitment to the health and economic prosperity of The Bahamas on our journey to achieving UHC..

NHI Authority Board Chairman Dr. Roberts clarifies some misconceptions about the new proposed plan for NHI.

NHI Bahamas Primary Care

National Health Insurance Bahamas (NHI Bahamas), in its initial phase of coverage, covers Primary Health Care services. Persons do not have to pay at point of service for Primary Care, including no copay, deductible or new tax when enroled with a Primary Health Care Provider, either in the public or private sector.

What patients say about NHI

A patient satisfaction survey conducted by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has revealed that over 95% of beneficiaries were either very satisfied (57.64%) or satisfied (38.07%) with the health care experience they received from their NHI doctor. The survey was completed by 5,122 beneficiaries between July and November 2018.
